A Rockdale County man found dead along a downtown Atlanta interstate Wednesday morning had gotten out of a car on I-20 after an argument and apparently later fell down a steep embankment, police said Thursday.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Russell T. Sutton Jr. of Conyers.

About 9 a.m., Atlanta police learned that a man’s body was on the I-20 westbound ramp to I-75/85 northbound, Officer Kim Jones told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Jones said Thursday that Sutton had been with family and friends at the Graveyard Tavern on Glenwood Avenue New Year’s Eve.

After leaving the bar around 1:30 a.m., “an argument ensued and the victim exited the vehicle and stated that he would rather walk,” Jones said.

She said Sutton’s family and friends last made contact with him by text at 4 a.m. Wednesday.

“The family had been looking for the victim all morning and pulled over at the incident location when they saw an ambulance,” Jones said.

“At this point in the investigation, it appears that the victim fell down a steep embankment, possibly from the Capitol Avenue exit ramp,” she said, adding that an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death.
