A man who allegedly tried to rob a Hinesville convenience store Monday night was shot and killed by a clerk who pulled his own gun.

When police arrived at the Kwik-Way Food Mart on Elma G. Miles Parkway, the suspect was already dead.

Hinesville police reported receiving a call of a shooting Monday night and responded to the scene. There, officials determined an attempted robbery had taken place.

The suspect, hit once, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The male clerk who fired the deadly shot was not reported injured.

Police did not say if the suspect also fired his weapon.

Not far away from the scene are two churches, a natural foods store and a Jumping Jacks Family Fun Center.

Authorities have identified the dead man but are withholding his name pending notification of his family.

No charges have been filed, although an investigation is continuing.
