The motorcycle driver killed three weeks ago may have been racing another motorcycle just before the fatal wreck in Cobb County, police said Thursday.

Darnell C. Griffin, 29, of Hiram, was driving a 2008 Kawasaki ZX600 motorcycle eastbound on Windy Hill Road when he was hit by a 2004 Kia Optima on April 23, according to Cobb police.

Investigators believe Maria T. Howard, 50, of Marietta, was driving the Kia westbound on Windy Hill and attempting to make a left turn onto Favor Road when the wreck happened, around 6:20 p.m., police previously said.

Griffin died at the scene of the wreck, Officer Alicia Chilton said. Howard and her 15-year-old daughter, who was in the front seat, were treated at WellStar Kennestone Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The wreck remains under investigation and no charges have been filed, Chilton said Thursday. Investigators now believe Griffin was possibly racing another motorcycle before the wreck, but need additional information.

Anyone with information about another motorcycle being involved is asked to call police at 770-499-3987.

Griffin, a Newport News, Va., native, worked at SBC Recycling in Powder Springs and was a college student, according to his online obituary. He is survived by a son and numerous family members.
