An Austell man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of his fourth felony, the spokeswoman for Cobb County District Attorney Vic Reynolds said today.
Charles Bernard Anderson was convicted Thursday in the Oct. 28, 2012, armed robbery of a Waffle House in Cobb County, Kim Isaza said in a news release. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Evidence at trial showed that the 39-year-old Anderson pointed a handgun at a cashier during the midday robbery of the Waffle House at 7350 Six Flags Dr. in Mableton. One accomplice kept watch at the door and another waited in a getaway vehicle.
Cobb jurors deliberated for just over an hour Thursday afternoon before returning the guilty verdict. He has prior convictions for armed robbery, burglary, and drugs and firearms offenses.
Anderson was offered a plea, but refused to accept it, said Cobb Assistant District Attorney Courtney Mays, who prosecuted the case.
“People like you have always been with us,” State Court Judge Henry Thompson told Anderson. “People who would rather steal than work. … It’s because of people like you that we have laws … and prisons. That’s where the law says you have to go now. The sentence is life without the possibility of parole.”
Anderson has been in custody at the Cobb jail since Oct. 29, 2012. One co-defendant in the case, Kenneth Andre Eason, was convicted of armed robbery last fall and sentenced to life in prison. The third co-defendant, Shantel Monique Washington, is awaiting trial.
