All buildings at Clayton State University were evacuated and searched after a bomb threat Monday afternoon, according to police and university officials. But several hours later, no explosives had been found.
The campus, located in Morrow, was evacuated after the threat was made, shortly after noon, Maritza Ferreira, university spokeswoman, said in an emailed statement.
“We are asking for people to avoid coming to campus until we indicate that the campus has been re-opened,” Ferreira said at 2:20 p.m.
Classes were cancelled for the remainder of the day. The main campus later re-opened for vehicles, Ferreira said.
Police dogs from several agencies were searching all campus buildings for possible explosives, a spokeswoman for Clayton County police said.
No details were released on how the threat was made or which building was involved.
“We can assure you we are taking all necessary precautions for the safety of all students, faculty, staff and the surrounding community,” Ferreira said.
A message marked "Urgent" was posted on the University's website at 1 p.m.
“Please evacuate all campus buildings until we advise that it is safe to return inside,” the alert stated. “Thanks for your patience and we apologize for the disruption.”
Later Monday afternoon, the university’s website was updated to say that rescheduled exams would continue Tuesday. Monday was the final day of classes for the spring semester, according to a university calendar.
