A 9-year-old girl remains in the hospital a day after she and her mother were struck by a hit-and-run driver in Chamblee.

Police said the woman and child were hit around 3:45 p.m. Monday on Chamblee Dunwoody Road by a out-of-control black Ford Explorer.

Chamblee police found the abandoned SUV shortly after the incident, but have not yet located the driver, Lt. Jim Wiley said today.

“We know who owns the vehicle, and we think that person can lead us to the driver,” Wiley said. “But we haven’t been able to locate the owner, which is troubling.”

The girl, who sustained serious injuries to her head and foot, was riding a bicycle on the sidewalk near where her mother was walking. The mother, who has injuries on her legs and back, was also holding a 2-year-old child, police said. The 2-year-old was not hurt.
