A child received third-degree burns after being thrown from a boat in an explosion on Lake Lanier near Buford Dam Park on Sunday afternoon.

The child and two adults were taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, but Gwinnett County fire spokesman Lt. Colin Rhoden told Channel 2 Action News that be believed the child had the most serious injuries. She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

“The explosion actually knocked her out of the boat and into the water,” Joe Jordan, a witness, told Channel 2 on Sunday. “It sounded like a bomb had gone off.”

Jordan had been out on another boat when he and his girlfriend heard and saw the explosion, Channel 2 reported.

After the explosion, the boat was reportedly engulfed in flames.

A caller told Gwinnett County fire authorities about the explosion around 2 p.m. and said that everybody had gotten off the boat.

Gwinnett arson investigators are examining the boat to determine the cause of the fire.
