Seventy-one cats were removed from a Dunwoody home Wednesday morning, two years after 50 cats were removed from the same residence, according to police.

DeKalb County Animal Control was called to the Atcheson Lane home after a local veterinarian reported that two people brought in 20 cats for treatment of various ailments, Dunwoody police said. A search warrant was executed at the home, where investigators found more than 70 cats living in deplorable conditions.

Most of the cats were healthy, but some were being treated for illness, Detective Jason Gagnon with DeKalb Animal Control told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Wearing haz-mat suits and respirators, investigators removed the animals from the home, according to police. The cats were taken various shelters, including Good Mews in Marietta, where 34 of the animals were taken.

“They are currently at our facility and some will be going to foster care,” Lisa Johns, shelter director, said in an emailed statement Wednesday afternoon. “Prior to being placed for adoption they first need to be evaluated, treated if necessary and spayed or neutered.”

The homeowners, whose names were not released, are expected to face charges, according to police. The two were arrested in 2012 for having more than 50 cats in deplorable conditions, pleaded guilty, were ordered to seek psychological help, and agreed not to own or care for pets in the future, police said.

“We have a history of similar situations at this address,” Gagnon said.
