Five people sustained minor injuries Tuesday afternoon in a chemical spill at a Forsyth County water plant.

The five, whose names were not released, were contract workers at the Forsyth County Fowler Water Reclamation Facility on Carolene Way in Cumming and were unloading sodium hydroxide from a truck, according to Chief Jason Shivers with the county’s fire department.

Residual gas was released while the chemical was being moved, causing burns to the workers’ eyes, Shivers said.

The workers were treated by a hazmat team housed across the street from the water plant at fire station No. 2, Shivers said. The five were then transported to Northside Hospital-Forsyth, where they were treated and in stable condition.

No one in surrounding areas, including nearby Fowler Park, was in danger, Shivers said.
