Testimony continued Friday in the Cobb County trial of De’Marquise Elkins, 18, facing murder and other charges in the shooting death a 13-month-old in Brunswick last March.

Police say Elkins shot the baby and his mother during a robbery. Defense attorneys are raising questions about whether the police, under pressure to make a quick arrest, went after the right person. They also showed how an eyewitness lied multiple times to police.

The trial could continue through next week, as the prosecution will call more than 30 witnesses to the stand, including the police officers who testified Friday. The jury also heard Friday from Karimah Elkins, De’Marquise’s mother who is charged with helping cover up the crime and hide the .22-caliber handgun police say was used.

The baby’s mother, Sherry West, is expected to testify next week.

The most riveting testimony this week came from 15-year-old Dominique Lang, also charged with murder as Elkins’ accomplice. He told police West refused to hand over her purse, so Elkins pointed the gun at the baby and counted down from five before pulling the trigger.

The complicated case was moved to Marietta, 300 miles from Brunswick, following extensive publicity that has divided Brunswick among racial and socio-economic lines.
