One victim in a shooting Wednesday at a North Carolina high school has died and the suspect is believed to be a student, according to reporter Kenny Beck.

The victim was identified as William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr., according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect, who has not been identified, is in custody, according to reporter Neill McNeill.

Winston-Salem Police Chief Catrina A. Thompson said William was taken to a hospital where he died, Beck reported.

The suspect was spotted and shots reportedly were fired at a family reunification center in the parking lot of the Harris Teeter Shopping Center in Winston-Salem, according to reports.

The shooting happened Wednesday at Mount Tabor High School, according to a Facebook post from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

The campus has been secured, according to the post.

Officials are actively seeking the suspect and have not confirmed any other shootings or injuries, according to police.

Other schools in the area were on lockdown out of an abundance of caution, according to WGHP.

Parents were told to report to the Harris Teeter grocery store at Whitaker Square to be reunited with their children, according to police. It was previously reported that parents gather at the Robinhood Family YMCA.

The gunfire was reported shortly after noon on Wednesday, WXII reported.

Winston-Salem police have a hazardous devices unit on the scene, WGHP reported.

A father of a student who attends the school told WGHP that he was able to get in touch with his daughter and confirm that she is safe.

“Your heart stops for a few minutes until you finally get in touch with them,” the father said.
