A 19-year-old woman was shot near the University of Georgia campus Monday afternoon by a 17-year-old, police said.

Officers responded to the 200 block of Weir Circle, just off Baxter Street, about 3 p.m. and found the woman in a parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds, Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Lt. Shaun Barnett said.

The woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. She remained in the hospital as of Thursday, Barnett confirmed.

Soon after the woman was taken to the hospital, Carlos Cochran arrived with a gunshot wound. Investigators were able to determine that Cochran had received the injury during the same incident and was the suspected shooter, Barnett said.

Detectives are still working to determine a motive and how Cochran received his injuries. He remains in custody at the hospital, Barnett said.

Cochran has been charged with aggravated assault and could face additional charges, Barnett said.

Authorities were not able to confirm the exact nature of the woman and teen’s relationship, but they “were familiar with each other,” Barnett told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Twenty minutes after the incident, UGA tweeted an alert about an off-campus shooting at Parkview Homes. The university advised all students and staff to avoid the area. The university said there was no longer a threat about an hour later.

Neither the woman nor the teen had any relationship to UGA, Barnett confirmed.
