A DeKalb County 2-year-old died this afternoon after apparently being trapped inside a car for at least an hour, according to police.

The girl, whose name was not released, had returned home to the English Oaks Apartments on Church Street with her mother and sibling and was playing outside, Clarkston police Chief Christine Hudson said. The twins’ mother took one toddler inside to change a diaper and asked a family member to watch the other child, Hudson told Channel 2 Action News.

About an hour after realizing the toddler was missing, the adults found the girl inside the car, Hudson said. Investigators believe the car door had been left open and the toddler was able to climb in and shut the door, trapping herself inside.

The girl was not breathing when police and firefighters were called to the scene. CPR was performed at the scene on the child, who was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston but did not survive, Hudson said.

No charges had been filed tonight in what police called a tragic accident.
