A 17-year-old passenger is dead and three others were injured after the driver of their car lost control and flipped into a Gwinnett County creek, police said.

Asaviya Hazley of Lawrenceville died in the wreck, which happened about 2:15 p.m. Sunday on Oakland Road.

Hazley was sitting behind the driver in the backseat of the gray Nissan Maxima, Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

The car was approaching Herrington Road and went too fast around a curve, according to an incident report.

The driver crossed into oncoming traffic and overcorrected, sending the Maxima off the roadway. It went airborne and hit a tree, the report said. It then slid down an embankment into a creek, resting on its passenger side.

Investigators said none of the occupants was wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to Northside Gwinnett Hospital, the incident report said. The front-seat passenger and a rear passenger both sustained serious injuries and were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Two of the survivors are 20 years old, and the other is 15 years. Their names were not released.
