With three children inside their Ellenwood home, a 40-year-old man shot his girlfriend several times in the torso area before turning the gun on himself, the spokesman for the DeKalb County Police Department said Thursday.
About 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, officers went to the home in the 3200 block of Rockmill Drive, Capt. Steven Fore told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Inside the kitchen, police found the man's girlfriend. The man, also 40, was found dead in the den of the residence from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Fore said.
The three children inside the home with another adult at the time of the shooting did not witness the incident and were not injured, he said. They were with a family member Thursday, Fore said.
The injured woman was at Grady Memorial Hospital in critical, but stable condition, he said. Medical personnel believe she is going to survive, Fore said.
The dead man's name was not released pending notification of next of kin. Fore said he did not know if the man was the father of any of the children. Their ages were unknown.
The double shooting remains under investigation.
"Detectives currently investigating the incident believe it will be domestic related," he said.
