The 34-year-old man found dead along the Chattahoochee River was the victim of homicide, Cobb County police said this afternoon.

A fisherman spotted the body Monday afternoon near Austell and called 911, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. The body was badly decomposed when it was pulled from the water, police said.

“When officers arrived, they confirmed that the body was lying on a log near the bank,” Sgt. Dana Pierce said in an emailed statement today. “The Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services recovered the body and with the assistance of a boat from the Department of Natural Resources, officials were able to take it to a nearby boat ramp where it was turned over to the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination.”

The Cobb M.E.’s office has identified the deceased male as 34-year-old Perfecto Ochoa Alvarado, Sgt. Dana Pierce said today. A cause of death was determined, but was not released due to the ongoing investigation, Pierce said.

Investigators believe Alvarado may have been dead for up to two weeks before his body was found. Police have not determined where he was killed, Pierce said.

Anyone with information about Alvarado is asked to contact Cobb police at 770-499-3945.
