At least 10 people were impacted by a fire that broke out at a DeKalb County townhouse community, officials said Wednesday.

Heavy smoke and flames had taken over the roof of three units at the Cedars of Chalet community on Maypop Lane in Decatur by the time firefighters arrived about 9 a.m.

Capt. Dion Bentley, spokesman for DeKalb fire, said no one was inside the units when firefighters arrived. Several residents were at school when the fire broke out, and apartment maintenance officials had evacuated one person inside the building after a neighbor pointed out the flames, he said.

Bentley said investigators are assessing the damage, but it appears the flames were mostly confined to the roof. He said there will be water damage in the affected units.
