The Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Building was evacuated Thursday after a 2-inch gas main line broke in front of the building, Atlanta police said.

The break happened at 77 Forsyth Street. It was related to ongoing construction, according to Atlanta police spokesman Officer Jarius Daugherty.

The break prompted Atlanta police and fire officials to close roads in the area while crews worked to bring the break under control. Pedestrians were diverted from the area, and several streets were closed for blocks while workers were on the scene.

Crews from Atlanta Natural Gas were called to work on the break. It was capped about 2:30 p.m., and streets were reopened soon after.
