The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has obtained the 60-page internal affairs investigation into the shooting of Deravis Caine Rogers, 22, and it reveals that the Atlanta police officer who shot him did not even know if Rogers was a suspect in any crime at the time of the shooting.

Officer James R. Burns shot Rogers through the passenger window of Rogers' car as he drove by and ignored a command to stop. Rogers was later pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital.

In a disciplinary action that became effective Tuesday, APD fired Burns July 1 and said the deadly force used against Rogers was excessive and not justified.
