Clapper's resignation after more than 50 years of service comes as the Trump administration mulls its direction on national security matters. Clapper said Thursday during testimony to the House Select Intelligence Committee that submitting the resignation "felt pretty good."

"I have 64 days left and I'd have a pretty hard time with my wife going past that," Clapper said, according to CNN.
