A carjacker drove off with a woman’s car in southwest Atlanta while her child was still inside Saturday morning, police said.
The woman was pumping gas at a BP station on Cascade Road near I-285 when a man jumped in her car shortly before 9:30 a.m., Fulton County police said.
The carjacker apparently didn’t see the child, who was in the back seat, before speeding away in the woman’s Chevrolet Equinox, said Fulton police spokeswoman Cpl. Partrena Smith.
A witness who didn’t wish to be identified saw the car pull away and jumped into action, Channel 2 Action News reported.
“She said, ‘My kid! My kid’s in the car.’ So I jumped in my car and tried to chase him down 285,” the man said.
About eight minutes later, the car was found abandoned about seven miles away on Sylvan Road near Langford Parkway, Smith said. The toddler was found safe inside, police said.
Police still are searching for the carjacker.
