The State Road and Tollway Authority and Gov. Nathan Deal on Wednesday approved $33 million in grant and loan funding for 20 transportation projects aimed at relieving congestion and boosting economic activity statewide.

The money from the Georgia Transportation Intrastructure Bank went to Community Improvement Districts as well as state and local governments that were willing to pony up some of their own cash to advance projects, but needed a little extra help from a low-interest government loan or grant to reach their goals.

A record number of governments and CIDs — 58 — had applied, but only 20 were chosen based on the limited amount of funding available.

Among the approved projects in metro Atlanta were $2.4 million for a Diverging Diamond Interchange at Windy Hill Road and I-75 in the Cumberland CID, $2.8 million for exit ramp improvements at Ga. 400 and Windward Parkway, $1.2 million for a South Barrett Reliever that will mitigate congestion on Barrett Parkway, $3.1 million for pedestrian and roadway improvements in the city of Atlanta, $784,000 for intersection enhancements at Tilly Mill Road and North Peachtree Road, and $750,000 to realign Windsor Parkway north of its intersection with Roswell Road.
