A man who was rescued Tuesday after a fire broke out inside his southwest Atlanta home has died, authorities said.
Crews were dispatched to the 3300 block of Benjamin E. Mays Drive about 5:30 p.m., Atlanta fire spokesman Sgt. Cortez Stafford said.
The fire was called in by a driver who passed the burning home and saw the large flames and thick smoke. The driver tried to get in through a back door, but couldn’t get past a set of burglar bars, authorities said.
“There was only one person inside the house at the time,” Stafford said, adding that crews were able to get the man out of the home when they arrived at the scene.
He was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital, Stafford confirmed Wednesday. His name has not been released.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread to surrounding homes. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
The incident occurred hours after a 62-year-old DeKalb County woman was killed in her living room after her house caught on fire.
