A man purposefully hit his neighbor with his car, then waved a machete, threatening several people nearby, according to the Coweta County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies arrested 45-year-old Peter Douglas Wood on Wednesday after a call of an assault with injuries on Westport Place in Newnan, officials said.

Wood’s neighbor and another man were walking their dogs around 7 a.m. when Wood drove onto the curb and into the victim, sheriff’s office spokesman Col. Jimmy Yarbrough confirmed.

After attempting to hit the men a second time, Wood exited the vehicle waving a machete and threatening people nearby, including the two men and one of Wood’s relatives who had come out of his house to help the victim, according to Yarbrough.

When deputies arrived at the scene, the victim was injured but alert. He is being treated at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

Deputies found a machete in the front yard, Yarbrough said.

According to jail records, Wood is being held at the Coweta County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault.
