An admitted gang member has been sentenced to 40 years with 20 years to serve in prison after seriously injuring a man during a shooting in Newnan last year, authorities said.
Ammad Minuel Houston, a member of Atlanta’s MOB PIRU street gang, pleaded guilty to all of his charges, including two counts of violation of Georgia’s Street Gang Terrorism Prevention Act, according to a news release from Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney Herb Cranford.
Houston also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime a week before his trial date, which was scheduled to start Monday.
Following a verbal altercation in June 2018, Houston shot the unarmed victim, Shavar Kavin Elom, in the stomach in the front yard of an apartment complex, according to the release. Houston believed Elom was a member of the rival Crip street gang, the release said.
Authorities said Elom, who was 34 at the time, suffered severe injuries to his intestines and had to undergo surgery.
