Atlanta police are conducting an internal investigation after an officer ran a red light and was T-boned by a MARTA bus Sunday night.

Both the officer and the bus driver were injured when the two vehicles collided about 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of Langhorn Street and Lucile Avenue in southwest Atlanta. The officer’s emergency equipment was activated at some point before the accident, according to Atlanta police.

“At this time, we cannot find any indication that he was going to a call,” Capt. Jessica Bruce told Channel 2 Action News from the scene.

The impact sent the patrol car into a pole and pinned the officer inside his car. Once freed, the officer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with visible head injuries. He was not named.

“The department will conduct an internal investigation to determine whether the officer’s actions were appropriate and justified,” police spokesman Sgt. John Chafee said in a statement. “At this time, the investigation continues.”

Both the driver and a passenger on the bus were taken to a hospital for minor injuries, according to MARTA. They were released Monday morning.
