Home in SW Atlanta destroyed in fire; officials tracking arsonists in the area

Firefighters walk out of a Coleman Street home in southwest Atlanta after containing a fire.

Officials are investigating if an early morning fire at a vacant southwest Atlanta home was intentionally set, months after alleged arsonists burned other homes in the same neighborhood.

Sgt. Cortez Stafford told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire in the 1000 block of Coleman Street in the Pittsburgh area of Atlanta. They are considering arson as a possibility.

“It is still under investigation right now, but some preliminary items will probably lead us to that conclusion,” Cortez said.

No one was inside the home when firefighters were called to respond just before 7 a.m. A fire was already blazing on the front porch and in the front interior of the home.

The structure was destroyed. Cortez said the fire could be linked to others in the neighborhood.

“Just a few months ago there were some arsonists in the area, but we are looking into those,” he said. “Those have died off; our investigators have done a really good job on tracking some folks down.”
