A hiker was rescued Sunday morning after he fell from a ledge at Stone Mountain Park.

The hiker, who was not named, slipped on the granite ledge and fell about 15 feet to the ground below, DeKalb County Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Dion Bentley told AJC.com on Monday.

The steep angle and rough terrain made it difficult for authorities to get to the hiker, Bentley said. A crew that specializes in high angles was called to scene to aid in the rescue about 8:45 a.m.

The crew mounted the hiker onto a wheel and rolled him to safety.

The emergency crew loaded the hiker into a stokes basket — a stretcher similar to the sort of device used in deep water rescues — and used a rope to hoist him up the steep cliff, according to Bentley. The crew then mounted the basket onto a wheel and rolled the hiker a half-mile to the main road.

The hiker suffered minor injuries from the incident and is expected to be OK, Bentley said.
