A pedestrian in Gainesville died after he was hit by a car while walking in the roadway, police said.

The fatal crash happened about 4 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Athens Highway and Lenox Drive, according to Gainesville police spokeswoman Cpl. Jessica Van.

Tony Odell Thomason, 57, of Gainesville, was walking along Athens Highway near Wilson Drive, Van said. When he entered the roadway, a silver Nissan Sentra hit him.

Thomason was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with serious injuries, Van said. He later died of his injuries.

The driver of the Nissan stayed at the scene, Van said. No charges are expected at this time.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Gainesville police at 770-534-5252.
