The former chief of police for Savannah-Chatham was indicted Thursday on federal charges of commercial gambling and extortion.
Willie Lovett, 65, pleaded not guilty to the seven count indictment, five counts of which were for extortion, and was granted an unsecured bond of $30,000, according to the Savannah Morning News.
Three other defendants were charged alongside Lovett for varying crimes relating to gambling, though Lovett was the only one to appear in court, the newspaper said.
Lovett, if convicted, is looking at a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each of the five extortion charges along with additional sentences for other charges.
