The FBI released a sketch of a suspect in the vandalizing of an Alpharetta mosque May 26.
The suspect allegedly wrote “Where is justice” and “London Justice” on the entrance sign at the Islamic Center of North Fulton. The vandalism was in apparent reference to the British soldier who was killed May 22 by two Islamic extremist.
Witnesses, who saw the man defacing the sign, described him as an older white male who was carrying a paint bucket and paint brush and had a rag on his head. The sketch is based those witness accounts.
“I’m just totally surprised and disappointed that something like this has happened,” Chairman of the center Moiz Mumtaz told Channel 2 Action News on May 28. “This particular center hasn’t done anything, but sometimes people take their frustrations and anger … with someone who is innocent.”
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has asked authorities to investigate the incident as a hate crime.
However, FBI spokesman Stephen Emmett said they are investigating the case as a felony damage to religious property.
Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 404-679-9000 or Alpharetta police at 678-297-6375.
