A dog was killed Monday night when a fire broke out at a Cherokee County home, officials said.

A 911 caller reported the flames on the back porch of a home in the 1400 block of Bart Manous Road shortly after midnight, Cherokee fire spokesman Tim Cavender said.

The homeowner told first responders he had been sleeping when he awoke to a fire in the back room. The cause is not clear.

The homeowner and his fiancee were able to escape, but they told firefighters that their two dogs were still inside.

One of the dogs, a pit bull, died in the blaze. The condition of the other dog was not released.

The homeowner and his fiancee both had minor injuries and were treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire caused severe smoke and water damage to the home, Cavender said. A white Toyota RAV4 and a black Toyota Tacoma were also destroyed.

The blaze is still under investigation.
