A Dacula High School student died Wednesday after deliberately injuring herself in the school gym, the principal said.

The student, whose name was not released, died after being treated by emergency responders and taken to the hospital, Principal Bryan Long said in a letter to parents posted on the school's website.

The letter provided no details about how the student injured herself. She was the only student in the gym at the time, according to Sloan Roach, school district spokeswoman.

“While no other students were involved, many students knew that ‘something’ was going on as the gym was cordoned off as police and first responders were at our school,” Long said.

Additional counselors are expected to be at the school Thursday, Long said.

“As an educator and a parent this type of situation is very difficult,” Long wrote.

All after-school activities were cancelled.
