A 65-year-old Rome woman has died from respiratory failure and complications from the disease caused by the coronavirus, Floyd County Coroner Gene Proctor confirmed Thursday.

Elizabeth Eugenia Wells was a member of the choir at the Church at Liberty Square, according to Proctor. The Cartersville house of worship has been linked to other COVID-19 cases.

Wells was admitted to Redmond Regional Medical Center on March 7 with a fever and respiratory problems. The following day, she was tested for the highly contagious virus. On March 12, her test results came back positive.

“We have to get with the Department of Public Health and we have to make sure we track down when maybe this started and where she went and what contacts she had,” Proctor said. “We are going to feed information to DPH and see if we could stop this from happening to anyone else.”

A total of 287 Georgians have now tested positive for the new coronavirus, up from 197 cases Wednesday, according to the latest data from state health officials. At least 10 Georgians have died from COVID-19.
