Two robbery suspects were killed in a wreck this morning trying to escape their pursuing victims, police said.
Just before 6 a.m., a couple picking up a car near Atlantic Station was robbed by two armed men, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
Chandler Lawson was dropping off Rashida Valentin at her car in the 300 block of 16th street when robbers approached brandishing handguns, police said.
Police said the thieves ordered the couple to give up all of their belongings, then ran back to a Jeep Patriot and drove away.
Lawson and Valentin pursued them, police said.
“Mr. Lawson stated Ms. Rashida then dialed police as he pursued the vehicle containing the males who recently robbed them,” the police incident report reads.
The Jeep was traveling on Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard near Wheeler Street in northwest Atlanta when it hit a fire hydrant, and then went up onto an embankment.
Lawson and Valentin were close behind and apparently saw the wreck, according to police.
Police investigating the crash scene found a pair of handguns and $300 in cash inside the SUV.
Fulton County Medical Examiner’s officials identified one of the men in the SUV as 29-year-old Antonio Brown of Atlanta.
The other man in the vehicle has not been identified, pending notification of next of kin.
No charges were filed against Lawson and Valentin, police said.
