A police officer was jumped and his gun was stolen Saturday night as he tried to break up a fight outside a southwest Atlanta gas station.

According to Atlanta police, the incident happened shortly after their officer responded to a 911 call at the Chevron station on the corner of Campbellton and County Line roads. When he pulled up, he reportedly saw a man in a physical altercation with the store clerk.

The officer tried to take the man into custody, but a second man jumped him from behind, police said. The two suspects eventually ran away, leaving the officer with minor injuries.

Initially, the officer believed his gun and his police radio were stolen during the struggle. Investigators later discovered the radio was dislodged from the officer’s belt and was not taken by the men, police spokesman Officer Jarius Daugherty said.

The gun was still missing Monday morning, and police are working to identify and locate the suspects.

“Due to the open investigation, at this time we have no plans to release any footage related to this incident,” Daughtery said.
