Careless smoking might have caused a house fire that left a 70-year-old man dead in a Sandersville home Friday, according to the Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner.

Ruland Henry Creel, 70, was found on a couch in the living room, the commissioner’s office said in a statement Tuesday.

The fire has been ruled undetermined “with the probable cause to be careless smoking,” the statement said.

Crews from the Tennille Fire Department were sent to the home in the 6400 block of Smith Robinson Road about 5:30 p.m. Friday. Investigators said the home was about 21 years old and had no smoke detectors.

Authorities believe the fire started in the living room because it had heavy damage from the blaze. Most of the home suffered severe smoke damage.
