An argument between a man and a woman at a southwest DeKalb County home led to a nearly eight-hour SWAT standoff Tuesday morning, police said.

Tyler Bass, 30, was taken into custody after he emerged from the home on Rock Knoll Drive about 10:40 a.m. He had been barricaded inside since 3 a.m. after confronting officers in the front yard, DeKalb police Capt. R.C. Hughes told AJC.com.

He was allegedly carrying a handgun.

“At that time the officers drew their weapons,” Hughes said. The officers and Bass exchanged gunfire, police confirmed to AJC.com.

“The gentleman retreated back inside the location, where he barricaded himself,” Hughes said. “He held up there for a while until we were able to get SWAT negotiators out to talk him out of the home.”

The woman involved in the dispute, who was the only other occupant of the home, came outside to speak with officers. Hughes said it did not appear she was injured, although there may have been threats of violence.

More than 20 police vehicles, including the SWAT tanker, were staged along Rolling Rock Drive and Rolling Place while negotiations were underway. Neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution.

“Any time there’s a subject that’s barricaded inside their home, we're always concerned about the safety of those around that location,” Hughes said of the large police presence.

Only one DeKalb County police officer was injured. She fell during her encounter with the suspect and hurt her wrist, Hughes said.

Bass came out of the house on his own after speaking with his mother on the phone, Hughes said. He was taken into custody without incident and was booked into the DeKalb County Jail, where he faces an aggravated assault strangulation charge and two counts of aggravated assault on an officer.
