Police on Monday released the name of the teenager who died in an apparent accidental shooting inside a friend’s Paulding County home.

Investigators believe two boys, ages 14 and 15, were handling a .22-caliber rifle in a bedroom when a shot was fired, according to Sgt. Ashley Henson with the Paulding Sheriff’s Office. Matthew Ryan Hubbard, 15, of Heflin, Ala., died after being shot in the head.

The shooting happened shortly after 7 p.m. Friday on Legend Creek Way in South Paulding. The GBI conducted the autopsy on the teen.

No charges had been filed in the case Monday afternoon, Henson said.

“This young man was taken from the world way too soon,” Paulding Sheriff Gary Gulledge said. “Gun safety is everyone’s responsibility. Please remember to always keep guns and ammunition locked in a safe place and out of the reach of children. God bless all of the families involved in this tragic case.”

A Facebook fundraising page was created to assist Matthew's family with funeral costs.
