ORIGINAL STORY: The GBI is investigating after someone was killed in a shooting that involved an Atlanta police officer.

Edward Barnett III, 28, of Jonesboro, was killed when gunfire erupted in a parking lot near the Lyfe ATL nightclub, according to GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles.

The Atlanta police officer fired shots while trying to break up a gunfight early Sunday morning, according to police spokesman Carlos Campos.

The incident happened in the 200 block of Courtland Street, Campos said. The officer was working an off-duty job in a parking lot near the nightclub about 1:40 a.m., Miles said.

At some point, he saw two groups of people shooting at each other from several cars in the parking lot, Campos said.

“In an attempt to stop the gunfight, the sergeant gave verbal commands to the involved parties and ultimately fired shots from his service weapon,” Campos said.

It’s not clear if the shots the officer fired struck any of the people involved in the gunfight.

Barnett died at the scene and two others were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds. The officer was not injured.

Police found multiple high-powered rifles and handguns, as well as drugs, at the scene, Campos said.

Multiple people were detained, but no one has been arrested in connection with the incident. According to the GBI, however, charges are expected to be filed against several people.

It’s the 13th officer-involved shooting investigation the GBI has opened in 2020, Miles said.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don't involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI's tally.
