Apartments near the site of a shooting that left two men dead at a DeKalb County complex were evacuated Wednesday after authorities found “possible hazardous materials” there.

The double shooting happened at a complex in the 4000 block of Russwood Avenue in unincorporated Stone Mountain, according to DeKalb police spokesman Sgt. J.D. Spencer.

Police were sent to the complex about 2 p.m. Wednesday on a shots-fired call, according to Channel 2 Action News. Officers found two men, both in their 20s, with gunshot wounds.

“When we arrived we saw a subject down on the ground, he had been shot,” Maj. Craig Medlin told the news station. “When we searched the area, we found a second subject at the apartments in the breezeway.”

Both victims were taken to a local hospital, where they died, Spencer said.

Police believe the men may have been involved in “risky behavior, possibly drug activity” Spencer said.

“During the course of the investigation, officers located an apartment with possible hazardous materials,” Spencer told AJC.com.

Police evacuated nearby units until the location was determined safe. The fire department was brought in, and a hazmat team determined that the air quality in the apartment was normal, Spencer said.

It’s unclear what those materials were.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. An investigation is ongoing.
