A woman was killed Friday morning after she climbed out of her wrecked vehicle and began walking in the middle of a busy DeKalb County road, police said.

DeKalb police shut down the Moreland Avenue ramp to Thurman Road for several hours Friday morning to investigate the deadly incident. According to police spokeswoman Michaela Vincent, the woman was hit by multiple vehicles and was dead at the scene.

“It appears that the victim got into a single-vehicle accident, which disabled her vehicle, and began walking on Moreland to perhaps get help or to get home,” Vincent told AJC.com.

The woman may have lived nearby, she said. The victim is not being named until her family is notified.

One southbound lane was closed while the investigation was underway. Police have not made a determination on charges for any of the drivers involved.
