Police were called to investigate after a truck sideswiped a school bus two times outside a northeast Atlanta elementary school Thursday morning.

The bus was turning into a bus lane at Springdale Park Elementary School on Ponce de Leon Avenue, and a white truck was trying to pass, according to Atlanta police. After the first contact, the truck driver got out to check on the condition of the bus, the 19 students on board and the damage to his vehicle, Atlanta Public Schools spokesman Ian Smith said.

“As the driver of the other vehicle drove away, his vehicle grazed the bus again but failed to stay on scene until the police arrived,” Smith told AJC.com.

There was minor damage to the rear left side of the bus, police said, and no injuries were reported. Paramedics with Atlanta fire were called to the school as a precaution, which is standard protocol, Smith said. All of the students were cleared and allowed to report to their homeroom, and the school day proceeded as normal, he said.

The truck driver is considered to be at fault, Atlanta police spokesman Officer Jarius Daugherty said. Investigators have not identified the driver, and they do not know if he is affiliated with the school.

No further description of the truck was provided.
