The rain moved out and brisk winds moved in Tuesday across metro Atlanta. Much colder temperatures are expected early Wednesday. Here's what you need to know as the winter that won't let go makes one more stand:
Freeze warning posted: The National Weather Service has posted a freeze warning for much of north and central Georgia from midnight to 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Frigid forecast: Channel 2 Action News meteorologist David Chandley said lows early Wednesday will be around 33 degrees in town and in the upper 20s to low 30s in the suburbs. It will be sunny and cool in the afternoon with highs in the upper 50s. The average high for this time of year: 71 degrees, Chandley said.
The wind: Metro Atlanta and the rest of north Georgia were under a wind advisory until 10 p.m. Tuesday. And by mid-afternoon, heavy winds pulled trees down across roadways, on top of at least one vehicle, and one on top of a home in Cobb County.
Trees toppled: Shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters rescued two women trapped on the second floor of a home on Sugar Creek Drive, near Marietta, when a large tree fell, according to Lt. Dan Dupree with the Cobb fire department. After being rescued, the two were transported to the hospital with unknown injuries. In Sandy Springs, a portion of Riverside Drive between River North Court and Johnson Ferry was temporarily shut down due to a tree down on wires, according to police. A large tree that fell in Gwinnett County pulled down power lines, knocking electricity out to some residents.
Forecast for rest of the week: Skies will be partly cloudy Thursday, and there's a 30 percent chance of rain Friday, Chandley said. Highs will be in the mid-60s Thursday and Friday, with lows early Friday in the upper 40s. The weekend will begin with partly cloudy skies Saturday, with highs in the low 70s and lows around 50 degrees. Check the full forecast and track changes.
Rain lowers pollen count: With the overnight rain, Tuesday's pollen count dropped to 1,180 particles per cubic meter of air, about one-third of Monday's count of 3,495.
