An Atlanta police officer was taken to a hospital Tuesday morning after crashing into a utility pole.

The officer was responding to a call for service in southwest Atlanta about 2:15 a.m. when the cruiser wrecked in the 1600 block of Harbin Road, according to police.

“The officer lost control of the vehicle in a curve and struck a mailbox and utility pole,” police spokesman Officer Steve Avery said in a statement. “Damage to the vehicle was severe and wires were knocked loose from the pole.”

The officer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for observation, Avery said. Georgia Power worked through the night to repair the damaged utility lines.
