A Springfield, Missouri, police officer has been hospitalized after being run over by a car driven by a man who had reportedly been threatening officers at the station.

Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams said the officer and the suspect have been hospitalized after the incident. According to Williams, the man allegedly came into the police station threatening officers and attempting to enter the building. Due to the threats, the station was briefly shut down Tuesday morning.

The suspect allegedly urinated on the side of the police station and left, but he returned in a white SUV and began driving toward an officer.

One officer stepped out and flagged him down, saying ‘hey, we need to talk to you,” Williams said during a media briefing. “... He (the suspect) made a beeline for the officer.”

The officer was crushed between a bollard in front of the building and the front end of the SUV. Another officer shot at the driver of the SUV to stop the “immediate assault” of the officer, Williams said. The driver stopped after being shot, and officers pushed the vehicle off the officer after the incident.

The suspect was described as a white male.

Neither the name of the officer nor suspect has been released. Both were transported to a hospital, but Williams did not have a status on their conditions.

The officer, however, was “breathing and talking” when he was transported, Williams said.
