A Middle Georgia police officer shot an Atlanta man Wednesday morning while investigating a burglary.

The burglary happened about 1:40 a.m. at the Jet No. 61 gas station on North Columbia Street in Milledgeville, the GBI said in a news release. Police sent out a notice shortly after that in efforts to find the vehicle involved.

About 4 a.m., a Milledgeville police officer spotted the car at the Jet No. 29 gas station on East Hancock Street, the GBI said. The officer tried to stop the vehicle, but it sped away.

Investigators said the car crashed into a nearby wooded area after a chase.

“The officer heard a loud noise and discharged his duty weapon, striking Antonio Craig Martin, 50, of Atlanta,” the GBI said. It is not clear if Martin was the burglary suspect.

Martin was flown to Navicent Health in Macon, where he is stable.

“At this time, no weapon has been located,” the GBI said.

An investigation is ongoing.

The incident is the 68th shooting involving a law enforcement officer the GBI has been called to investigate so far this year.

The previous one happened in Whitfield County on Monday, when authorities said a Texas fugitive shot a deputy during a traffic stop.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the state agency’s tally.
