Two men were killed Friday morning in southwest Atlanta when a driver fleeing the scene of a minor crash slammed head-on into a 74-year-old in a pickup truck, police said.

The fatal crash occurred about 11:20 a.m. in the 2100 block of El Paso Road near Campbellton Road, Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer TaSheena Brown told AJC.com.

Officers arrived to find both men dead at the scene after their vehicles sustained “catastrophic damages” in the crash, she said. The bodies of 74-year-old Leroy Wilson and 42-year-old Antonio Slaton were removed from the wreckage by Atlanta fire crews.

Moments earlier, Slaton had been involved in a minor crash at the intersection of Campbellton Road and County Line Road before speeding away from the scene, investigators said. He fled west on Campbellton Road in his 2007 Dodge truck before crossing the double yellow line and slamming into Wilson’s 2003 Chevrolet pickup.

Slaton was not being pursued at the time of the crash, police said, and investigators believe he was trying to get away from the scene of the first wreck “as quickly as possible.”
