The decomposing body of a man was found Saturday on a portion of the popular Alpharetta Greenway in north Fulton County, according to a police spokesman.

Police spokesman George Gordon said detectives were called to the scene.

“I have confirmed decomposed male human remains have been found on Alpharetta’s greenway trail system south of Kimball Bridge Road,” Gordon said. “I can only confirm we have a body.”

The exact location of the body was not immediately provided. “The scene is significantly in the woods, so it would not be visible from any road,” the spokesman said. He also did not provide information on how the body was found.

No information was immediately available on the possible identity of the person or how long the body had been on the trail, which is officially known as the Big Creek Greenway.

The greenway was started in 1995 and extends roughly parallel to North Point Parkway, from Windward Parkway at Marconi Drive on the north end to Mansell Road on the south end. It covers more than eight miles of paved and unpaved track, and includes biking and hiking access. It meanders through a flood plain by created by Big Creek.
