Residents and commuters in a Smyrna neighborhood were alerted to be on the lookout for a bear this morning.

“We received four calls about a bear sighting 30 minutes ago and Cobb PD received a couple as well,” Smyrna police spokesman Christopher Graeff told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution just before 8:30 a.m. “It was seen in the residential area and commercial area on Highlands Parkway between South Cobb Drive and Highlands Ridge Road.”

He said officers checked the area but were unable to locate the bear.

Graeff did not have an estimate on the size of the bear.

While not a normal occurrence, bears are occasionally sighted in Atlanta’s suburbs.

Georgia is home to approximately 5,000 bears, the majority of which live in North Georgia, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.
